In 1970 (under Education Policy, 1970) the Directorate of Education Extension and Specialized Services (In-Service Teachers Training and Education of Special Children) came into existence.
In 1972 (under Education Policy 1972-78), the nomenclature was changed to Bureau of Curriculum & Extension Wing (BCEW) (Curriculum Development/Review and In-Service Teachers Training was focused).
The office of the Bureau of Curriculum & Extension Wing, Sindh is located at Jamshoro approximately 18 Km away from the Hyderabad city. There are eleven (11) In-Service training institutes and thirty-two (32) Pre-service Training institutes working under the umbrella of Bureau of Curriculum. It is the executive and administrative body which controls all Pre-service & In-Service teacher education & training institutes.
The head of BCEW, Sindh shall be the Director. The following are the major sections of the directorate and each section would be managed by Additional Director.

The Directorate of BCEW Sindh was established to meet the following aims and purposes;
i. Curriculum Development /Review of all subjects for classes I to XII.
ii. Training of In Service & Pre service teachers up to elementary level.
iii. Research studies regarding proposals for the betterment of (school) teachers and relevant fields.
iv. Assessment of Achievement of Teachers and Students in Sindh.
The BCEW feels that the prompt development of a knowledge-based society is vibrant to the success and progress of the province. That's why, the BCEW act as the catalyst for building a knowledge-based society and it cannot be done without improving the quality of education. Because of this reason the BCEW continuously working for the improvement of quality of education in line with its aims, objectives & purposes. The Associate Degree in Education (ADE) is one step forward.
After 18th constitutional amendment powers were delegated to the province to review /develop their own curriculum. Therefore, the task of Curriculum development/ review and all associated activities were entrusted to Sindh province. As a result of it the Bureau of Curriculum & Extension Wing (BCEW), Sindh was restructured & renamed as Directorate of Curriculum, Assessment & Research (DCAR) Sindh.
The Bureau of Curriculum and Extension Wing has been renamed as Directorate of Curriculum, Assessment and Research (DCAR) with its enhanced institutional capacity, and it will encompass the areas;
a) devise school education standards in line with guidelines provided by Curriculum 'Policy Wing of the Education and Literacy Department;
b) commission evidence-based research, curriculum design, development and review, textbook and learning material development, and assessment of for learning
c) develop, implement and evaluate curriculum by working closely with Sindh Textbook Board, Directorates of School Education and other related departments;
d) review textbooks and learning material for alignment with the school education standards and curriculum goals;
e) conduct students achievement tests at grade 3, 5 and 8
f) promote continuous assessment of students learning across all school levels.
